The Zombie's Papaya Party
In the garden where moonflowers bloomed even by day, something strange was happening. The old scarecrow, usually still and quiet, was RUNNING! His straw legs kicked up little puffs of dust as he zigzagged past the tomato plants.
Lily, who had been watching from her bedroom window, rubbed her eyes. But the scarecrow kept moving, dancing almost, toward the ORANGE sunset painting the sky.
"I'm not a scarecrow," the figure called out in a scratchy but friendly voice. "I'm Mr. Zom-Bee—the garden ZOMBIE! But don't worry, I only eat vegetables that want to be eaten!"
Lily giggled and ran outside. Mr. Zom-Bee was indeed unusual—his skin was the color of rich soil, and instead of being scary, he wore a flower crown made of daisies.
"I'm preparing for the Great PADEL Tournament!" Mr. Zom-Bee explained, pulling out a magical racquet made from a sunflower stem and spider silk. "It's a game like tennis, but played with fruit balls. The trick is, the fruit has to WANT to be hit."
He led Lily to a secret clearing where glowing fireflies lit up an enchanted court. There, resting on a velvet leaf, sat the most beautiful PAPAYA Lily had ever seen—golden and fragrant, almost humming with happiness.
"This papaya has been waiting all summer to be played," Mr. Zom-Bee whispered. "Would you like to be my partner?"
Lily's heart soared. She had never been chosen for anything at school. But here, in this magical garden, a gentle zombie wanted HER on his team.
Together they played—the papaya flying through the air like a small sun, Mr. Zom-Bee's laugh like rustling leaves, Lily running faster than she ever had before. The papaya cheered every time they hit it, and even when it splatted open on the ground, it didn't mind.
"Perfect!" it said in a sweet, fruity voice. "Now the seeds can plant themselves for next year's tournament!"
As the stars twinkled above, Lily learned something wonderful: being different didn't mean being scary, and the best games are played with friends who believe in you—even if they happen to be zombies who love fruit ball.
