The Zombie's Papaya Gift

Lily couldn't sleep. The full moon peeked through her curtains as she tiptoed downstairs to the garden. That's when she saw him—a zombie!

But this wasn't like the zombies in her scary movies. This zombie had kind eyes and wore colorful flowers in his hair. His name was Zeb, and he was the friendliest zombie in the world.

"Hello," said Lily, bravely stepping closer.

"Hello!" Zeb smiled, revealing surprisingly clean teeth. "Would you like to see something magical?"

Lily nodded eagerly. Zeb led her to an enormous papaya tree growing in the middle of her garden. The papayas glowed softly, like tiny moons.

"These are wishing papayas," Zeb explained. "Each one can grant one wish to someone with a pure heart."

Lily's eyes widened. Just then, her little brother Tommy's iPhone slipped from his bedroom window above. It dangled from its charging cable, swaying dangerously.

"Oh no!" cried Lily. "Tommy will be so sad if he loses his phone!"

Zeb reached up—stretching his zombie arms longer than any normal arms—and gently caught the iPhone by its cable. He handed it safely to Lily.

"Thank you, Zeb!" Lily beamed. "You're not scary at all. You're wonderful!"

Zeb's cheeks turned a light shade of pink. "Nobody's ever said that to me before. Usually, people run away."

"That's because they don't know you," said Lily. "My mom says true friends look with their hearts, not their eyes."

Touched by her words, Zeb plucked the ripest papaya from the tree. "I want you to have this," he said. "Make a wish, my friend."

Lily closed her eyes tight. "I wish that Zeb could find more friends who see him like I do."

The papaya began to sparkle and glow brighter. Fireflies danced around them as Zeb's zombie features softened. He transformed into a magical gardener with flowers in his hair.

"Your wish came true," Zeb whispered. "And now, whenever someone needs a friend, they'll find me in my garden."

The next morning, Lily discovered something amazing. A whole garden of glowing papaya trees had appeared overnight. And sometimes, when the moon was full, she could see other children visiting Zeb's garden, learning the most important lesson of all: true friends come in all shapes and sizes.

Lily smiled, touching the papaya on her nightstand. Magic was real, and so was friendship—the best magic of all.
