The Zombie's Padel Match

Forty-two years old and running on a treadmill at 6 AM, Marcus watched himself in the mirror—another zombie in the corporate herd. The bear market had claimed half his portfolio, his wife had left three months ago for a yoga instructor who actually listened, and here he was, forcing down a spinach smoothie that tasted like liquid despair.

"You coming to padel tonight?" David asked, changing beside him at the gym.

"Don't think so."

"Come on. Sarah's bringing her friend. The one with the dark hair."

Marcus almost said no. But something about the way David said it—like Marcus might still be worth fixing up—made him agree.

That evening, standing on the padel court under floodlights, sweat dripping down his spine, Marcus felt something shift. The ball cracked against his racket, sending it sailing past Sarah's friend Elena. She laughed, throwing her head back, and Marcus found himself laughing too—a real laugh, not the hollow chuckle he'd used at office parties for years.

"You're not bad," she said during a water break.

"I'm running on pure spite and caffeine."

"Works for me."

They played until their hands cramped. Afterward, at a bar around the corner, Elena told him about her divorce—how she'd borne two years of emotional sabotage before realizing she'd become someone she didn't recognize. Marcus talked about the bear market, about waking up one morning and realizing he'd spent decades building a life he didn't want.

"My ex used to make me drink those terrible spinach smoothies," Elena said, signaling the waiter. "I'm having actual food tonight."

"Me too," Marcus said, and when their knees touched under the table, neither pulled away.

Outside, the city hummed around them. For the first time in months, Marcus didn't feel like a zombie going through the motions of being alive. The bear market could crash tomorrow. His marriage was still over. But right now, watching Elena laugh at something he'd said, Marcus thought he might actually survive the resurrection.
