The Zombie's Orange Surprise
Lily loved the community pool. Every summer day, she'd dive into the cool blue water, feeling like a mermaid exploring an underwater kingdom. But today, something strange happened.
As Lily surfaced from a dive, she saw something weird at the bottom of the pool. It looked like a person, but green and floppy, moving slowly along the pool floor like seaweed dancing in the current.
"A zombie!" someone shrieked. Kids scrambled out of the water, pointing and gasping.
Lily stayed calm. She'd read every book in the library about magical creatures, and this didn't seem like the scary zombies from movies. This one looked... friendly.
She took a deep breath and dove underwater, swimming right toward the green figure. Up close, she saw it wasn't a zombie at all — it was a magical Pool Guardian! Its green skin shimmered like emeralds, and its floppy movements were just water dancing around it.
The guardian opened its hand to reveal something glowing and bright. An orange! But not just any orange — this one sparkled like a tiny sun, pulsing with warm light.
Lily surfaced, holding the magical orange. The Pool Guardian floated up beside her, smiling. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to see the truth," it said in a voice like bubbles. "This orange grants one wish to the kindest heart."
The other kids crept closer, wide-eyed. Lily looked at her friends, then at the glowing orange in her palm. "I wish," she said, "that our pool could always be this magical, and that everyone who swims here feels as happy as I do today."
The orange burst into hundreds of tiny orange lights that floated down into the water. Suddenly, the whole pool began to glow with a warm, golden shimmer. The water felt softer, sweeter, like swimming in liquid sunshine.
From that day on, the community pool became known as the most magical place in town. And sometimes, if you looked carefully, you could still see the green Pool Guardian dancing at the bottom, watching over all the happy children.
Lily had learned that sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most wonderful — if you're brave enough to look closer.
