The Zombie's Orange Hat
Zippy wasn't like other zombies. Sure, he had green skin and walked a bit stiffly, but he didn't want to moan or scare anyone. He just wanted friends.
He lived on a sunny island filled with swaying palm trees that whispered secrets in the breeze. Every morning, Zippy would sit beneath his favorite palm tree and watch children play on the beach. They laughed and built sandcastles and splashed in the waves. Zippy smiled too, but from far away, where no one could see him.
The problem was, everyone thought zombies were scary. They ran away when they saw him coming.
But Zippy had a secret treasure: a bright orange hat he'd found washed up on the shore. It was the color of sunshine and tangerines, and when he wore it, he felt brave. The hat had a magical way of making people smile—well, it would, if anyone gave him a chance.
One day, Zippy noticed a little girl crying near the palm trees. She'd dropped her favorite seashell somewhere in the sand and couldn't find it. Zippy's heart hurt. He wanted to help, but he was scared she'd run away screaming.
His orange hat seemed to whisper, "Try."
So Zippy approached slowly, his green knees knocking together. "I can help you find it," he said softly.
The girl looked up, eyes wide. But she didn't scream. Instead, she noticed his orange hat and smiled.
"That's the brightest hat I've ever seen!" she said.
Zippy's cheeks turned a slightly lighter green. "Thanks. My name's Zippy."
"I'm Lily. Can you really help me?"
Zippy knelt in the sand. With his long zombie fingers, he carefully sifted through the grains. Within minutes, he found it—a perfect pink shell spiral.
"You found it!" Lily cheered. "You're not scary at all. You're the nicest zombie I've ever met!"
"I'm the only zombie you've ever met," Zippy pointed out.
Lily laughed. "Want to build a sandcastle with me?"
"I've never built one before. I don't know how."
"I'll teach you!" Lily grabbed his green hand. "Come on!"
That afternoon, Zippy built his first sandcastle. He made the tallest tower, decorated with orange seashells that matched his hat. Other children came over. At first, they looked uncertain, but Lily introduced Zippy with such pride that soon they were all building together.
When the sun began to set, painting the sky orange and pink, Zippy sat beneath his palm tree surrounded by new friends. Someone had even made him a sand throne.
"Same time tomorrow?" asked Lily.
"Every day," Zippy promised, adjusting his magical orange hat.
He learned that day that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply be yourself—and that true friends don't see green skin. They see the heart underneath, especially when it's wearing a bright orange hat.
