The Zombie's Orange Gift

In the heart of Whispering Woods, where sunlight danced through emerald leaves, lived a creature named Zom. Zom was what the villagers called a 'zombie'—but they didn't understand him at all. Yes, his skin was slightly green, and yes, he moved slower than the breeze, but Zom wasn't scary. He was lonely.

Every day, Zom watched from behind the ancient oak tree as children played in the meadow. He longed to join them, but they always ran away screaming. 'It's the zombie!' they'd shout, leaving Zom with a heavy heart.

One afternoon, a girl named Lily wandered farther than usual into the woods. She was entranced by something glowing in her hand—her grandfather's old iPhone, showing pictures of magical forests. Lily didn't notice Zom watching her until she looked up.

Their eyes met. Lily didn't scream. Instead, she smiled.

'Hello,' she said softly. 'Would you like to see what I found?'

Zom nodded slowly, amazed. For the first time, someone wasn't afraid.

Lily showed him the iPhone, explaining how people could send messages through it. 'It's like magic,' she whispered. 'But sometimes, the best magic is right here.' She reached into her pocket and pulled out something bright and round—a perfect orange.

'Would you like one? My tree is full of them.'

Zom had never seen an orange before. His green eyes widened as Lily peeled it, releasing a burst of citrus magic that made the air sparkle. The orange segments glowed like tiny suns in her hand.

'Try it,' Lily encouraged.

Zom took a bite. Sweet juice burst in his mouth—tangy and bright, like sunshine captured in fruit. For the first time, Zom felt warm inside, as if the orange's magic was chasing away the grayness in his heart.

'Wonderful,' Zom spoke, his voice rusty from years of silence. 'Thank you.'

Lily beamed. 'We should be friends. Every day, I'll bring you an orange, and you can show me the secret places in the forest.'

And so began the most unlikely friendship Whispering Woods had ever known. The other children soon saw that Zom wasn't a monster—he was just lonely, and hungry for oranges and friendship.

The moral? Sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need a little kindness—and maybe a sweet orange—to show their true colors.
