The Zombie's Orange Garden
Lily's cat Whiskers always sat by the old orange tree in their backyard. One sunny afternoon, Whiskers meowed excitedly and batted at something shiny near the roots. It was a baseball! But not just any baseball—this one glowed with a soft, golden light.
Lily picked it up, amazed. The baseball felt warm in her hands, like it held sunshine inside. Suddenly, the old TV cable that lay buried near the garden began to shimmer. Sparks of light danced along the wire, forming a path that led to a hidden door beneath the orange tree's roots.
Whiskers trotted ahead fearlessly. Lily, curious and brave, followed. The tunnel opened into a secret garden where everything glowed orange—orange flowers, orange butterflies, even orange streams that flowed like liquid sunshine.
In the center sat a small creature. At first, Lily thought it might be scary, with its patchy clothes and sleepy eyes. But then it spoke in a kind, gentle voice.
"I'm not what you think," it said. "People call me a zombie because I move slowly and my clothes are old. But really, I'm just the guardian of this magical orange garden. I've been waiting for someone kind to find my baseball."
Lily's eyes widened. "You made this beautiful place?"
The creature nodded. "I tend all the orange trees, which grow friendship fruit. Anyone who eats them becomes a better friend. But I can't leave the garden to share them. Will you help?"
Lily's heart swelled with happiness. She picked the ripest orange and shared it with the creature. In that moment, she understood something important: true friends look beyond appearances and see the heart within.
Now every Saturday, Lily visits her secret friend. They tend the orange garden together, and Whiskers always comes along. The magical baseball still glows on her shelf, reminding her that magic exists everywhere—you just have to be brave enough to find it and kind enough to understand it.
And sometimes, the most wonderful friendships come from the most unexpected places.
