The Zombie's Orange Garden
Zed was a zombie, but not the scary kind. He didn't moan or shuffle. He didn't want brains for dinner. Zed loved flowers and sunshine and growing things.
Behind his crooked little cottage, Zed tended the most magical garden in the valley. Orange trees grew there — trees with glowing fruit that smelled like sunshine and dreams. But nobody ever saw them, because everyone was too afraid of Zed.
"He's a zombie!" children whispered. "He's spooky!"
Zed sighed and watered his orange trees. His greenish skin felt lonely. His patchy heart felt heavy.
One afternoon, something came crashing through the garden fence. It was Barnaby — the biggest, grumpiest bull in the valley. His horns were sharp. His hooves were heavy. He looked ready to charge.
But Barnaby didn't charge. He sniffed the air. His eyes widened.
"Is that... ORANGE?" Barnaby asked. Zed had never heard a bull speak before.
Zed nodded shyly. "Would you like one?"
Barnaby's stomach rumbled like thunder. The farmer had forgotten his breakfast again. The big bull lumbered forward, ready to gobble up all the oranges.
"Wait!" Zed cried. "These are magic oranges. If you eat them all at once, you'll float away like a balloon!"
Barnaby froze. "Really?"
"Really," said Zed, though actually he just wanted to share. "But if we share them, and eat them slowly while telling stories, they taste even better."
So the zombie and the bull sat together in the orange glow. They ate sweet fruit. Zed told stories about his garden. Barnaby told stories about adventures he'd had running through fields. They laughed until their sides hurt.
When the other children peeked through the fence, they didn't see a scary zombie. They saw a friend. They saw a bull who wasn't grumpy anymore. They saw orange peels scattered like happy confetti.
Soon, the whole village came to Zed's garden. They learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking things have the sweetest hearts — just like oranges have the sweetest juice inside their rough, bright skin.
And Zed? He finally had what he'd always wanted: friends who saw him, not just what he looked like.
Moral: Don't judge someone by how they look. The best friends sometimes come in the most surprising packages — even zombie ones.
