The Zombie's Midnight Pool Party

Lily loved summer evenings, especially when the fireflies danced over the old swimming pool in her backyard. The pool had been empty for years, or so she thought.

One moonlit night, Lily crept outside with her baseball glove, practicing catches in the soft light. Suddenly, a green figure emerged from the deep end of the pool — a zombie! But not a scary one. This zombie had papaya flowers tucked behind her ears and a friendly smile.

"I'm Papaya," the zombie said, shaking water from her hair. "This isn't just any pool. It's a magical midnight pool where lonely children find friends."

Lily's eyes widened. "But... zombies are scary."

"Only in stories," Papaya laughed. "Real zombies just need friendship and papaya juice." She handed Lily a glowing orange fruit. "Want to play?"

Together they played baseball under the stars, the ball leaving trails of stardust. Lily ran around the pool's edge, laughing as Papaya cheered her on.

"You're fast!" Papaya said. "Running with friends makes everything better."

The zombie explained she'd been lonely for 100 years, waiting for a friend who wasn't afraid. Lily learned that scary-looking things aren't always scary — sometimes they just need someone brave enough to say hello.

Every night that summer, Lily returned to the midnight pool. She learned that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes, even green and papaya-scented.

When school started, the pool looked empty again. But Lily knew better. She left a papaya by the edge, just in case another lonely kid needed a magical friend.

Some nights, she still heard splashing and laughter. And she smiled, knowing that somewhere, another child was discovering that the scariest things can become the best friends — if you're brave enough to try.
