The Zombie's Midnight Garden

Lily was a curious girl with wild curly hair and dirt under her fingernails. Every night, she watched the old house next door. Something magical happened there at midnight.

One summer evening, Lily couldn't sleep. The moon hung like a glowing papaya in the sky when she heard scratching at her window. It was Mittens, her neighbor's fluffy orange cat, and Barnaby, a scruffy brown dog with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down. They wanted her to follow them!

Lily tiptoed outside in her pajamas. The cat and dog led her through a hole in the fence, into the mysterious garden next door. And there she saw him—a green-skinned zombie with stitches across his forehead, wearing a sunshine-yellow apron and gardening gloves.

"Hello!" he said, his voice warm and rumbly like thunder in the distance. "I'm Zed. Welcome to my midnight garden!"

Lily wasn't scared. Zed wasn't like the zombies in scary movies. He was gentle, carefully watering plants that glowed with soft light. "Most people think zombies are scary," Zed explained, "but I'm different. I was a gardener who loved plants so much that I came back just to keep tending them!"

The garden was magical. Purple roses sang soft melodies. Sunflowers turned their faces to the moon. And in the center grew the most beautiful papaya tree Lily had ever seen, its fruits shimmering like jewels.

"This papaya tree grants friendship wishes," Zed said. "But it only blooms for those who see with their heart, not just their eyes."

Mittens purred and rubbed against Zed's leg. Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. Zed laughed, a sound like autumn leaves crunching.

"Will you be my friend?" Zed asked shyly. "Being a zombie is lonely when everyone runs away."

Lily smiled, her heart full. "I'd love to be your friend, Zed. And I can help you in the garden!"

The papaya tree suddenly glowed brighter, and a perfect fruit dropped into Zed's hands. He sliced it open, and inside, the seeds formed the shape of a heart.

From that night on, Lily visited Zed's garden whenever she couldn't sleep. She learned that true friendship isn't about how someone looks—it's about kindness, shared dreams, and opening your heart to the wonderful unexpected. And sometimes, the best friends are the ones you find in the most magical places.

Now, whenever Lily sees a papaya, she smiles, remembering the zombie who taught her that everyone deserves a friend, and that magic is real—you just have to know where to look.
