The Zombie's Midnight Game

The moon hung bright over the backyard swimming pool, casting silver ripples across the water. Ten-year-old Leo couldn't sleep, so he crept outside with his baseball glove, hoping to practice some pitching under the stars.

What he found made him gasp.

Near the pool's edge shuffling slowly was a zombie - but not the scary kind from movies. This zombie looked sad and lonely, his pale face glowing softly in the moonlight. He wore tattered clothes and moved stiffly, like his legs had forgotten how to bend.

"Hello?" Leo whispered, clutching his baseball tight.

The zombie stopped. His eyes, surprisingly gentle, widened. "I... I remember this," he croaked, pointing at the baseball. "But I've forgotten how to play."

Leo's fear melted away. "What's your name?"

"Zed," the zombie whispered. "I've been wandering for so long... looking for someone to help me remember."

Soon Leo's friends Mia and Sam joined them, and the four new companions spent the most magical night ever. Leo taught Zed how to toss the baseball back and forth. At first, Zed's fingers were stiff and clumsy, but with each throw, he grew more confident. The baseball sailed through the cool night air, and Zed's smile grew wider with every catch.

"I have an idea!" Mia said, running to her garage. She returned with a padel racket and some old cable she'd found. "Let's make up a new game!"

They used the cable to mark a court around the pool and played a splashing version of padel, hitting a soft ball back and forth. Water sprayed everywhere as Zed laughed - a rusty, wonderful sound like leaves crunching in autumn.

As dawn approached, Zed's skin began to glow warmer, his movements becoming more fluid. "You've saved me," he said, tears of joy in his eyes. "Friendship and play - that's what breaks the lonely spell."

The children promised to meet Zed every midnight, and that summer became the most magical of their lives. They learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things just need a little kindness, a lot of laughter, and friends who believe in magic.

And every night under the stars, the pool became their enchanted playground where anything was possible, even teaching a zombie how to be a kid again.
