The Zombie's Messy Hair

Lily loved visiting the stream behind her house. The cool water rushed over smooth stones, making tiny splashes that sounded like giggles. Every afternoon, she'd sit with Mittens, her fluffy orange cat, and skip stones while the dragonflies danced.

One foggy morning, something strange appeared by the water. It was a zombie! But not a scary one—this zombie wore a polka-dot bow tie and looked very sad.

"What's wrong?" Lily asked, stepping closer. Mittens hid behind her legs, peering out with curious green eyes.

"Oh, hello," the zombie said softly. "I'm Zeb. I woke up feeling very lonely, and my hair is simply terrible!" He pointed to his head. Green moss grew where hair should be, tangled with small twigs and autumn leaves.

Lily gasped. "That's not terrible—that's magical!" She knelt beside Zeb. "See? The moss is like a tiny forest. And this leaf looks like a butterfly's wing."

Zeb's eyes lit up. "Really? I thought everyone would run away."

"Not us!" Lily declared. "Would you like to meet my friend? She lives in the big cave upstream."

Together they walked along the sparkling water until they reached the cave. Inside, a gentle bear named Bella was sorting colorful stones she'd collected from the riverbed.

"Bella!" Lily called. "This is Zeb. He has the most wonderful hair—look!"

Bella lumbered over, her warm brown eyes curious. She smiled when she saw Zeb's mossy hair. "Would you like me to braid it? I know how to make beautiful things with twigs and flowers."

Zeb nodded eagerly. Bella's big paws were surprisingly gentle. She wove tiny blossoms into his mossy hair, adding sparkle from the river stones. Mittens the cat purred loudly, curling up beside Zeb's feet as if he'd found a new friend.

When Bella finished, Zeb looked in the water's reflection. His hair wasn't messy anymore—it was magnificent! A crown of flowers, moss, and river magic.

"I'm not lonely anymore," Zeb whispered. "I have friends who see the beauty in everything, even a zombie's messy hair."

Lily smiled, understanding something important: sometimes the things that make us different are exactly what make us special. And the best friendships start when someone takes the time to really see you.

That afternoon, by the flowing water, a cat, a girl, a bear, and a zombie sat together—four friends who learned that magic lives in the most unexpected places, especially inside each other.
