The Zombie's Magical Swimming Hat
Lily was seven years old and had the most wonderful cat named Whiskers. Whiskers was orange with bright green eyes, and he could do tricks like jumping through hoops and dancing on his hind legs.
One hot summer day, Lily's grandmother gave her a special present. It was a beautiful blue hat with silver stars sewn all around it. "This is a magic hat," Grandma whispered with a twinkle in her eye. "It helps you see the good in everyone."
Lily wore her hat everywhere. That afternoon, she and Whiskers went for a walk to the old house at the end of the street. The other children said it was haunted by a zombie.
As they approached the garden, Lily saw someone sitting alone by a pond. It was Mr. Grumble, the grumpiest neighbor in town. His clothes were old and tattered, and he moved slowly, like the zombie stories said. But when Lily looked through her magic hat, she didn't see a monster. She saw a lonely man who looked sad.
Whiskers ran right up to Mr. Grumble and jumped onto his lap. The old man's face lit up with surprise, then a smile. "Well, hello there, little friend," he said softly, petting the cat's orange fur.
Lily walked closer. "I'm Lily, and this is Whiskers. Do you like cats?"
Mr. Grumble nodded. "I had a cat once. She was my best friend. But that was a long time ago, before I got sick and had to stay inside for many years. The children started calling me a zombie because I moved so slowly and stayed in the dark."
Lily felt sad for him. "That's not very nice. Would you like to come swimming with me? The pond looks perfect for a cool swim on such a hot day."
Mr. Grumble's eyes widened. "I haven't been swimming in forty years. But today... today I think I would like that."
And so, with Whiskers watching from the shore, Lily and Mr. Grumble went swimming together. They splashed and laughed, and for the first time in years, Mr. Grumble felt young again.
The magic hat had been right. Sometimes, the scariest-looking people just need a friend to help them remember how to smile.
