The Zombie's Magical Papaya Patch

Lily followed the butterfly through the forest until she found a secret garden. In the middle grew the biggest papaya she had ever seen—glowing golden like a tiny sun!

Suddenly, a figure stepped out from behind the leaves. Lily gasped. It was a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He wore a flowered apron and his messy green hair was decorated with tiny blossoms and butterflies.

"Hello!" said the zombie, smiling warmly. "I'm Zeb. Would you like to play padel?"

Lily's eyes went wide. "You know padel?"

Zeb nodded enthusiastically, his wild hair bouncing with every movement. "The greatest game in the world! But first, we need the perfect ball."

He plucked the magical papaya from the tree. As soon as it touched the ground, it began to bounce!

"Watch this!" Zeb handed Lily a racquet. He tossed the papaya, and—POUNCE—it bounced against the wall with a cheerful BOING sound.

They played for hours. The magical papaya never stopped bouncing, and every time it hit a wall, it sprinkled glittering dust that made everything smell like sunshine.

"You're really good," Zeb said, adjusting a flower in his crazy hair. "You know, papayas only grow magical when someone tends them with love. And padel is more fun when you play with friends."

Lily looked at Zeb—at his kind eyes, his flower-decorated hair, his gentle smile. She realized something important.

"I thought zombies were scary," Lily admitted.

Zeb laughed, and the papaya bounced extra high with happiness. "The scariest things are usually just the things we don't understand yet."

Lily smiled back. "I'm glad I met you, Zeb."

"And I'm glad I met you," said Zeb. "Want to come back tomorrow? I'm growing a rainbow papaya!"

Lily couldn't wait. She had found something better than a secret garden—she had found a friend, and learned that the best surprises come from keeping your heart open.

As she skipped home, she touched her own hair and wondered what kinds of flowers might grow there someday.
