The Zombie's Magical Garden

Lily loved playing baseball in her backyard. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her favorite bat—the one with sparkly purple stickers—and hit balls over the fence into the mysterious garden next door. No one had lived in that house for years, but somehow, beautiful flowers always bloomed there.

One sunny afternoon, Lily hit her best swing ever. The ball sailed high into the sky and disappeared into the neighbor's garden. She climbed the fence carefully and peeked through the bushes.

What she saw made her gasp.

A green-skinned boy was dancing among the vegetables! He moved slowly and sort of wobbled, with stiff arms that swung like pendulums. A zombie! A real zombie!

But instead of looking scary, he was carefully tending to a patch of vibrant green plants. He hummed a cheerful tune while watering them with a sparkly silver can.

"Hello?" Lily called out, her voice trembling just a little.

The zombie jumped—almost comically—and turned around. "Oh! A visitor!" He smiled, revealing surprisingly nice teeth. "I'm Zed. Would you like some fresh spinach?"

"Spinach?" Lily stepped closer. "But... you're a zombie. Don't zombies eat... brains?"

Zed laughed, a sound like autumn leaves crunching. "That's just a silly story! Real zombies know that spinach gives you super strength. Watch!" He ate a leaf and suddenly did a perfect cartwheel, then jumped over a pumpkin plant.

"That's amazing!" Lily cried. "Can you play baseball?"

"I've never tried," Zed said thoughtfully. "But I bet spinach-powered super speed would help!" He munched another leaf and grinned. "Want to play?"

They spent the whole afternoon playing baseball together. Zed could run incredibly fast and catch impossible balls. Lily taught him how to hold the bat, and he taught her about all the magical vegetables in his garden.

"Why does your garden grow so well?" Lily asked as the sun began to set.

"Because I care for it with love," Zed said simply. "And because eating spinach makes me strong enough to take care of everything here. Plants need kindness, just like people do."

Lily nodded slowly. She had always thought spinach was yucky, but seeing how it helped Zed made her curious.

"Try one," Zed offered, holding out a fresh leaf. "It might give you magical powers too."

Lily took a small bite. It actually tasted... sweet and fresh, like sunshine and rain. Suddenly, she felt a little tingle in her toes. When she picked up her baseball bat, it felt lighter than ever before.

From that day on, Lily and Zed became best friends. They formed the neighborhood's most unusual baseball team. And every game day, they'd share a special snack from Zed's garden—fresh, magical spinach that gave them the courage to try new things and the strength to be kind to everyone they met.

Lily learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things can be the most wonderful, and that trying new foods—like spinach—might lead to the best adventures of all.
