The Zombie's Magical Garden
Leo never believed the rumors about the zombie living behind the old pyramid-shaped hill until the day his glowing yellow padel ball bounced right over the top.
"I'll get it!" Leo called, rushing around the hill. There, in the middle of the most beautiful garden anyone had ever seen, stood a small green figure with wild hair and the kindest eyes Leo had ever seen.
"You're... you're a zombie!" Leo gasped.
The zombie nodded sadly. "I'm Zombo. Everyone runs away before I can explain. I'm not scary—I'm a gardener!" He pointed proudly at rows of papaya trees with golden-orange fruits glowing like tiny suns.
"Those are the biggest papayas I've ever seen!" Leo said.
"Magic papayas," Zombo beamed. "One bite makes you brave. Two bites make you kind. Three bites make you a friend forever."
Leo noticed something glittering around the garden's edge. Hundreds of padel balls!
"Children hit them over the hill. I keep them safe, hoping someone will come find them."
Leo's eyes widened. "That's why everyone loses their balls! We thought they vanished into thin space!"
"Will you... tell them I'm friendly?" Zombo asked, his voice small.
Leo grabbed the biggest papaya. "I'll do better. I'll bring everyone here tomorrow for a match!"
The next day, Leo led his friends around the hill. Zombo handed out magical papaya slices, and soon the whole village was laughing, playing padel, and making new friends. The zombie who scared everyone became the best friend nobody knew they needed.
Sometimes, Leo thought, the scariest things are just the most wonderful things waiting for someone brave enough to say hello first.
