The Zombie's Magical Breakfast

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, but today she found something strange. A zombie was shuffling near the old pool, looking sad and confused. But this wasn't a scary zombie like in stories—he looked more like a sleepy boy with mossy hair and dirt-smudged cheeks.

"Are you okay?" Lily asked, stepping closer.

The zombie nodded slowly and pointed at the sparkling pool. When Lily looked into the water, she gasped. A magnificent sphinx was reflected there, even though no one stood beside them.

"I've been waiting for someone brave enough to speak," the sphinx's voice echoed like golden bells. "This boy, Leo, wandered into my magical garden and ate from the wrong patch. Now he's stuck in this zombie-like sleep until he eats the cure."

Lily's grandmother's prize bull, Ferdinand, ambled over and nudged Lily's hand with his wet nose. The sphinx smiled. "The bull knows the answer. Ferdinand, show her."

Ferdinand led Lily behind the old pumpkin patch where vibrant green spinach leaves grew taller than her waist. "Spinach?" Lily asked. "That's the cure?"

"Not just any spinach," the sphinx explained. "This is enchanted moon-spinach, grown only under starlight. It wakes what has been made sleepy by magic."

Lily gathered handfuls of the shimmering leaves. The zombie's eyes lit up at the sight. She fed him the spinach, and with each bite, color returned to his cheeks. The moss fell from his hair, revealing soft brown curls.

"Thank you!" Leo cheered, sounding like himself again. "I thought I'd be stuck like that forever."

The sphinx nodded approvingly. "You showed kindness instead of fear, Lily. That's the strongest magic of all."

From that day on, Leo, Lily, and Ferdinand the bull spent every summer exploring the magical garden together, always careful to ask before eating anything—and always keeping some moon-spinach handy, just in case.
