The Zombie's Magic Papaya
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's house, especially near the old swimming pool that nobody had used for years. The pool had turned into a secret garden of vines and wildflowers. One Tuesday, she found something surprising.
A zombie sat on the pool's edge, his feet dangling in the water. But he wasn't scary like in movies. He looked sad and tired, his greenish-gray skin drooping like a wilted lettuce leaf.
"Hello?" Lily whispered.
The zombie looked up. "Oh. Hello. I'm Zeb." His voice sounded like crunching autumn leaves.
"I'm Lily. Are you... okay?"
Zeb sighed. "I've been a zombie for three hundred years, and I've forgotten what it feels like to be alive. Everything is gray and mushy. Especially my brain." He tapped his head.
Lily sat beside him. "My grandmother says papayas have special vitamins that make you feel bright and happy. The most magical papayas grow right here!" She pointed to a vine hanging over the pool, where the sunniest papayas grew.
"Vitamins?" Zeb asked. "Zombies don't eat vitamins. We eat... well, nothing tasty."
"Maybe that's the problem!" Lily jumped up. She climbed down the pool ladder and reached across the water to pluck the ripest, goldenest papaya. It glowed in her hands like a tiny sun.
She climbed back up and split the papaya open with her grandmother's special knife (which she'd brought for exploring). Inside, the fruit was bright orange and smelled like sunshine and tropical dreams.
"Try it, Zeb. Just one bite."
Zeb hesitated. His zombie instincts said NO. But something about Lily's smile made him trust her. He took a tiny bite.
His eyes popped wide. "It's... it's like eating a rainbow!"
"That's the vitamin magic!" Lily clapped. "The special papaya vitamin!"
Zeb ate more and more. With each bite, his skin became less gray. His eyes sparkled. He even stood up straighter. By the time he finished the papaya, Zeb didn't look like a zombie anymore. He looked like a regular boy, with rosy cheeks and a giant grin.
"I feel ALIVE!" Zeb spun around. "Lily, you saved me!"
"We saved each other," she said. "I was lonely exploring by myself. Now I have a friend."
They spent the rest of the summer swimming in the pool and growing papayas together. And sometimes, when other zombies shuffled by looking tired and gray, Lily and Zeb would share their magic fruit.
Because everyone deserves to feel alive again — even zombies.
