The Zombie's Last Padel Match

The papaya sat untouched on her breakfast plate, bleeding orange juice onto the white tablecloth. Elena watched him from across the terrace—this man who'd spent three years undercover as her husband, a spy who'd stolen everything except her capacity to recognize him.

"One game," he said, standing at the padel court gate. "Like old times."

She laughed bitterly. "You mean before I found out you're a corporate spy? Before you destroyed my father's company?"

"Before you became this." His eyes swept over her—thirty-four and already eroded. "You've been a zombie since the divorce, El. Walking through your life like it's someone else's."

The accusation hit home because it was true. Since discovering Thomas's betrayal, she'd moved through her days in a haze of routine, emotionally hollowed out, working the same job, eating at the same restaurants, seeing the same friends who didn't know what to say anymore.

She picked up her racquet anyway.

They played in silence, the rubber ball crack-echoing against the glass walls. Thomas moved with the same lethal grace that had first drawn her in—athletic, precise, always three steps ahead. His orange shirt brightened against the gray sky, a flame she couldn't look away from.

"They're offering me a contract in Dubai," he said, returning her serve. "Corporate intelligence work. High risk, high reward."

"And you're telling me why?"

"Because I'm tired, Elena. I want out." He smashed the ball into the corner. "I want to be something other than a spy."

"You want to be a person." She understood then—they were both zombies, hollowed out by different hungers. She by betrayal, he by deception.

The papaya was still on her plate when they finished. He sat beside her, and for the first time in three years, she didn't flinch at his touch.

"Start somewhere else," she said. "Not Dubai. Not with them."

"Where?"

"Here. With me. If you're serious about being real."
