The Zombie's Green Garden

Lily was the only kid who actually liked the garden at the back of the playground. It was overgrown with wild vines and mysterious plants, and the other children said strange things grew there. But Lily loved secrets.

One afternoon, she discovered something extraordinary behind a thick patch of tomato plants. A small figure was carefully tending to neat rows of spinach leaves. The creature was greenish-gray, with stitched-up patches on his clothes and moss growing on his shoulders. A zombie!

Lily almost ran away. But then the zombie looked up with kind, crinkly eyes and held out a perfect spinach leaf. "For you," he rumbled gently. "Fresh picked."

"You're... you're a zombie!" Lily whispered.

"I am Green. I tend this garden." He smiled, revealing surprisingly clean teeth. "Most zombies shuffle around looking for brains. But I discovered something better." He gestured to the flourishing spinach around them. "Fresh vegetables make me feel alive inside."

Every day that week, Lily visited her new friend. Green showed her how to whisper to plants so they grew taller. He taught her that zombies weren't monsters—they were just lonely souls who needed friendship and good food. The spinach they picked together was the tastiest Lily had ever eaten.

"Why don't other children come here?" Lily asked on Friday, sitting among the towering spinach plants.

Green sighed, a sound like wind through dry leaves. "They are afraid of what they don't understand. They see my stitched clothes and gray skin and run away."

Lily stood up. "Then they need to meet you properly. You're the best gardener I've ever known, and you're my friend."

The next Monday, Lily brought her classmates to the garden. At first, they hid behind the playground equipment. But Green handed out spinach leaves and told silly jokes about his days as a wandering zombie. Soon, everyone was laughing and learning to plant seeds.

By summer's end, the garden flourished like never before. The school served the garden's spinach in the cafeteria, and everyone loved it. But best of all, Green was never lonely again. He had discovered that friendship, like spinach, makes everything better.
