The Zombie's Baseball Surprise
Max hated spinach. Every time his mom put it on his plate, he made a face. "Yuck!" he'd say, pushing it away.
One hot afternoon, while sitting by the swimming pool in his backyard, Max tossed his favorite baseball against the wooden fence. Thwack. Thwack. It was his favorite thing to do.
Suddenly, the baseball didn't bounce back.
Max leaned over the edge of the pool and gasped. The water was glowing a bright, shimmering orange! And there, floating right in the center, was his baseball. But it wasn't alone.
A green creature stood there, holding the ball. It looked like a zombie, but not a scary one — more like a friendly, confused zombie made entirely of fresh, green spinach leaves!
"Hello?" Max whispered, eyes wide.
The spinach zombie blinked and smiled. "Hello! I'm Zoodle. I come from the Green Kingdom below. We found your baseball floating down!"
"Is everyone there made of spinach?" Max asked, fascinated.
"Yes! We're the Spinach People," Zoodle said proudly. "We love playing games, but we've never seen a baseball before. What is it?"
Max's eyes lit up. "It's the best game ever! Want me to teach you?"
Zoodle clapped his leafy hands together. "Oh yes! But first, you must come through the orange pool to visit our kingdom!"
Max took a deep breath and jumped into the glowing orange water. Splash! When he came up, he was in a magical world where everything was green and growing.
All afternoon, Max played baseball with Zoodle and dozens of friendly spinach zombies. They laughed and played, and Max even ate some magical spinach — it tasted like sunshine and dreams!
"That wasn't so bad," Max said with a grin.
That night, Max swam back through the orange pool and climbed into his own bed. The next morning, when his mom served spinach for breakfast, Max smiled and ate every bite.
Sometimes, he thought, the things we think we hate might just be waiting to become our best friends.
