The Zombie's Baseball Secret
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, she could be found running across the grassy field, her glove held high, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. But today was different. Today was the big championship game, and Lily was nervous.
"What if I mess up?" she whispered to her best friend Mateo as they walked toward the field.
Mateo laughed. "You won't! But hey, my abuela says spinach makes you strong. Want some?" He pulled a green leaf from his sandwich and held it out.
Lily made a face. "No thanks! Spinach is yucky."
Just then, they heard a strange sound coming from behind the old equipment shed. *Thump, drag, thump, drag.* Lily's heart beat faster. Everyone knew the shed was haunted by the Baseball Zombie!
Mateo grabbed Lily's arm. "Let's go!"
But curiosity made Lily stay. A figure emerged from the shadows—green skin, tattered clothes, and something shiny in his hand. A baseball bat!
The Zombie smiled. "Hello, young players. I'm Zed, and I've been watching you practice."
"You're... you're a zombie!" Lily squeaked.
"Yes, but I'm the friendliest zombie you'll ever meet," Zed said. "I played baseball fifty years ago, before I became... well, this." He waved his green hand. "I want to help you win today."
"How?" Mateo asked, eyes wide.
"Believe in yourself," Zed said. "And eat your spinach!" He winked.
Lily couldn't help giggling. Maybe the zombie wasn't scary after all.
During the game, Lily kept thinking about Zed's words. When it was her turn to bat, she spotted him hiding behind the fence, giving her a thumbs-up. She took a deep breath, swung with all her might, and—CRACK!
The ball flew higher and farther than ever before. A home run! Her team cheered!
After the game, Lily found Zed and gave him her victory medal. "Thank you, Zed. You taught me that sometimes, the scariest things can turn out to be the best friends."
