The Zombie's Baseball Game
Leo pulled the dusty old hat from the attic chest. It was his grandpa's baseball cap from long ago, faded blue with a bent brim.
"Try it on!" whispered Mia, his best friend who lived next door.
Leo placed the hat on his head. Suddenly, the room spun like a carousel! When the dizziness stopped, they stood in a golden desert beneath a giant pyramid that glittered like millions of diamonds.
"Wow," breathed Mia, clutching her orange backpack.
A green figure shambled out from the pyramid's shadow. It had ragged clothes and bumpy skin—a zombie! But this zombie wore a tattered jersey and held an old baseball mitt.
"Play ball?" the zombie asked hopefully, his voice rusty but kind.
Leo and Mia exchanged looks. "You like baseball?" Leo asked.
The zombie nodded enthusiastically. "Been waiting 300 years for someone to play catch. My name's Buster."
And so began the most magical game ever. The zombie's name was Buster, and he explained he'd been a champion player in ancient times, cursed to guard the pyramid's secret treasure until someone challenged him to a fair game.
They played until the sun began to set. Leo hit the ball so hard it soared over the pyramid's tip! Mia caught an impossible fly ball that would've made the pros jealous. Even Buster laughed, his groans turning to giggles.
"You win," said Buster, removing an orange gem from his pocket. It glowed warm and bright. "This will take you home. And now I'm free."
"Free?" asked Mia.
"The curse is broken because you played with kindness, not to defeat me. Friendship is the real treasure."
Leo slipped the baseball cap back on. The desert dissolved into swirling stars.
Back in the attic, everything looked ordinary again. But in Leo's pocket sat an orange gem that still shimmered with pyramid magic, and sometimes, when the wind blew just right, they could hear faint laughter and the crack of a baseball bat.
"Same time tomorrow?" Mia grinned.
Leo touched his baseball hat. "Definitely. But next time, Buster's on our team!"
