The Zombie's Baseball Friend
Lily loved summer evenings, especially when her orange cat Mittens curled up beside her in the backyard. But tonight was different. As Lily tossed her baseball up and down, something magical happened.
A glowing palm tree appeared where their old oak tree stood. Its fronds shimmered like rainbows, and between its leaves swam a tiny blue fish in midair!
"Come play!" said a voice from the tree.
Lily and Mittens stepped closer. There, swimming in the magical palm tree's hollow, was a small green zombie. But he wasn't scary like in movies. He wore a baseball cap and held a tiny baseball.
"I'm Zim," the zombie said. "I've been watching you play baseball for weeks. Will you teach me?"
Lily's eyes widened. She had never imagined she'd be friends with a zombie, let alone one who swam in palm trees!
"Yes!" she said. "But how are you swimming in a tree?"
Zim laughed. "Magic! The palm tree is my portal from the Halloween Kingdom. I've been lonely there. Everyone else is busy being spooky."
Lily felt her heart warm. She knew exactly what it felt like to be lonely. "Let's play baseball!"
Zim climbed out of the palm tree, dripping with sparkles instead of water. His green skin glowed in the moonlight. Mittens purred and rubbed against his leg, making Zim smile so big his button eyes twinkled.
They played until the stars came out. Zim was amazing at baseball! He could hit the ball so hard it turned into shooting stars.
"Thank you, Lily," Zim said, hugging her goodbye. "I'll never be lonely again knowing I have a friend."
Lily waved as he swam back into the palm tree, which faded away until the next magical evening. She learned that friendship can bloom in the most unexpected places—even in a palm tree with a zombie who loves baseball!
