The Zombie Party
Marcus stood outside Jenny's house, hands sweating, clutching a bag of ice like it was something precious. His first real party. Not the awkward birthday cake kind, but a REAL high school party. The kind people actually talked about on Monday.
Inside, the bass hit him like a physical force. Someone had transformed the basement into a zombie apocalypse zone - fake blood splattered on walls, green fog curling across the ceiling, people staggering around with gray face paint and torn clothes trying to look undead.
"Yo Marcus!" Danny called from across the room, already wearing his zombie costume. "You gonna stand there all night or what?"
Marcus forced a grin. "Just... taking it all in."
He'd spent weeks planning his entrance. Three different outfit options. Five practiced greetings. But now, standing here in his carefully chosen vintage band tee and perfectly distressed jeans, he felt like the most obvious fake in the room.
The party game was already in full swing - Humans vs. Zombies, played with foam dart guns and way too much enthusiasm. Marcus watched as Jenny, somehow still looking perfect despite gray corpse paint, organized teams.
"Marcus!" she waved him over. "You're on our team. Humans."
He joined the huddle, trying to look natural next to the popular kids who'd barely acknowledged his existence all semester. That was when it happened - Jordan, Jenny's golden retriever of a dog, came bounding down the stairs, tail wagging like he owned the place.
"BEAR!" someone screamed.
The room went dead silent. Then chaos erupted. People were scrambling toward the exits, climbing over furniture, genuinely panicked. Marcus stood frozen, watching this absurd scene unfold - a room full of fake zombies terrified of an actual puppy.
Jordan was just standing there confused, holding the dog's collar, looking more uncomfortable than Marcus had ever seen him. The coolkid armor had slipped.
"It's just Bear," Jordan said quietly, but no one was listening.
Marcus found himself moving before he could overthink it.
"Hey," he said, stepping up to Jordan. "Need help with him?"
Jordan looked up, surprised. "Yeah. Thanks. He's not usually... this is kind of embarrassing."
They sat on the basement steps while Bear settled happily between them, getting pets from both. Other kids slowly filtered back, laughing at themselves, but neither Marcus nor Jordan moved to join the reinvented game.
"You good at this zombie stuff?" Jordan asked, genuinely curious.
"I'm more of an observer," Marcus said, then surprised himself by adding, "But I could probably hit a target if I needed to."
Jordan grinned. "Tomorrow, same time? You and me vs. these amateurs."
Marcus felt something real shift inside him - not confidence, exactly, but maybe belonging. Not as someone pretending to be cool, but as someone who could just be.
"Deal," Marcus said.
And for the first time all night, he wasn't thinking about how to play it right. He was just playing.
