The Zombie Papaya Promise

Luna's dog, Buster, loved adventure. Every morning, the golden retriever would nudge Luna's hand until she laughed and grabbed her sneakers. One Tuesday, they found something magical behind the old oak tree.

A giant bear sat beside a papaya tree, but this bear was different. Instead of roaring or running, the bear waved a furry paw and whispered, "Would you like to know my secret?" Luna held her breath. Most bears would chase a dog, but this bear smiled gently.

"I'm Barnaby," said the bear. "And this is my zombie papaya tree."

Buster tilted his head. Zombie papaya?

Barnaby explained. Long ago, a wizard cast a spell on this tree. Every time someone picked a papaya, it would grow back—but only if the picker made a promise to do something kind.

Luna's eyes widened. "You mean it's like magic?"

"The kindest magic," Barnaby nodded. "Would you like to try?"

Luna reached for a bright orange papaya. The moment her fingers touched it, the fruit popped back onto the branch like it had never been touched. Then, a warm feeling filled her chest.

"What's your promise?" Barnaby asked.

Luna thought hard. "I promise to help someone who's lonely."

Suddenly, the papaya glowed golden and dropped into her hands. It was sweeter than anything she'd ever tasted! Buster whimpered softly, hoping for a bite. Luna laughed and shared the fruit with him.

Barnaby beamed. "Now you're part of the zombie papaya promise too. Every good deed you do, the tree grows more fruit for someone else."

That afternoon, Luna visited Mrs. Higgins, who lived alone and loved company. Buster sat by the elderly woman's feet while Luna told her about the magical bear and the zombie papaya tree. Mrs. Higgins smiled so brightly that Luna knew this was exactly the kind of magic the tree wanted.

On the way home, Luna wondered: was the zombie papaya real, or was Barnaby the real magic all along? Either way, she couldn't wait to do more kindness and make more fruit appear.

Buster barked happily as if to say, "Same time tomorrow?"

"Absolutely," Luna whispered. "Absolutely."
