The Zombie Papaya Incident
Maya pulled her beanie down lower, practically hiding her entire face. This party was already a disaster, and she'd only been here twenty minutes. Her best friend Chloe had abandoned her the second they walked through the door, leaving Maya alone in a sea of seniors who looked like they'd been crop-dusted in glitter body spray.
She grabbed a slice of pizza from the kitchen counter—pineapple and jalapeño, gross but better than nothing—and was about to sneak out the back door when she saw him. Liam, the junior she'd been lowkey obsessed with since September, was standing by the papaya tree in the backyard. Maya's dumb brain instantly decided this was her moment.
She started walking toward him, trying to look casual and absolutely not like she was internally running a marathon of anxiety scenarios. But then her cat Pancakes, who'd somehow followed her here (she would literally never understand how), came bolting out from under a bush and launched himself at Liam's legs.
"Woah, little dude!" Liam laughed, scooping Pancakes up like this was a completely normal thing that happened at parties. "You must be hungry. This papaya's almost ripe, you want some?"
Maya froze. This was it. Her one chance to talk to Liam all semester, and her cat was stealing her moment with fruit-based flirtation.
"Actually," she heard herself say before she could stop her traitor mouth, "he's more of a zombie cat. Like, he's dead inside but somehow still going."
Liam stared at her for a solid three seconds. Maya considered faking a seizure to escape the situation.
Then he burst out laughing. "Same, honestly. That's literally me before third period."
They ended up talking for an hour about their shared hatred of morning classes, how papayas looked like alien organs, and the existential crisis of being a teenager in a world that expected them to have their entire lives figured out by age seventeen.
"You know," Liam said, handing her the perfectly ripe papaya, "I'm glad your cat decided to crash this party. Otherwise I probably would've spent the whole night pretending to look at my phone."
"Me too," Maya said, pulling her hat back and finally meeting his eyes. "Even though Pancakes is absolutely going to get grounded for this."
She walked home with papaya juice on her fingers and Liam's number in her phone, already planning exactly how to avoid her mom's questions about why she smelled like tropical fruit at 11 PM on a Friday night.
