The Zombie Padel Summer
Maya's oversized bucket hat wasn't just fashion—it was her invisibility cloak. Freshman year at Crestwood High, and she'd perfected the art of blending into lockers, bathroom stalls, and any corner with decent lighting.
"You joining the padel league?" Jake asked, spinning his racket like he owned the place. He was everything she wasn't: loud, confident, probably had perfect hair even after sweating through PE.
"Padel?" Maya adjusted her hat. "Isn't that tennis for people who couldn't make the tennis team?"
He laughed. "Dude, it's literally the sport of the summer. Everyone's playing. Even the seniors are lowkey obsessed."
Maya had been practicing in her backyard since school ended, hitting against the garage door until her arms felt like jelly. But admitting that meant risking failure. So she just shrugged.
"Whatever. I'm more of a zombie person anyway."
"Zombie?"
"Yeah, you know—staying up until 3am watching apocalyptic content until I can't feel my face. Living that undead life."
Jake raised an eyebrow. "Based. But you're missing out. There's a tournament next weekend. Winners get season passes to the water park."
Water park. Swimming. The one thing she was actually good at.
Her grandmother had taught her to swim before she could walk. The water was the only place Maya didn't feel like a background character in someone else's movie. It was where she could breathe, literally and figuratively.
The next week was a blur. Maya joined the padel league, her hat permanently glued to her head. She played like her life depended on it—every swing, every sprint, every dive for the ball.
"You're actually cracked at this," Jake said after she crushed a backhand winner. "Since when?"
Maya grinned. "Since zombies took over my brain."
They made it to the finals. Maya's arms were shaking, her legs screaming, but for the first time, she wasn't invisible. People were watching.
Her teammate missed. The ball sailed long. Match point for the other team.
Maya didn't think. She just leaped.
Her racket connected with the ball at the absolute edge of reach. It skimmed the net and dropped perfectly inside the line.
"WHAT?!" Jake screamed. "YOU ARE ACTUALLY INSANE!"
They won.
That weekend, Maya stood at the edge of the water park's lazy river, hat finally pushed back. Jake and the rest of the team were already splashing each other like little kids.
"Coming in?" he called.
Maya kicked off her sandals. The water would be cold, but she'd survived worse. Freshman year. Her first tournament. Finally letting herself be seen.
She dove in.
The zombie had learned to swim.
