The Zombie Padel Incident
Thursday morning hit me like a freight train. I'd been up until 3 AM doom-scrolling, functioning on zero sleep and three Dr Peppers — basically a certified zombie shambling through first period.
"Bro, you look dead," Marcus whispered, sliding into the desk next to me. "Big tournament today. You good?"
"Never been better," I lied, smoothing my hair for the thousandth time. Freshman year had turned me into someone who checked their reflection in every reflective surface. The bathroom mirror had witnessed my failed attempts to style my curls into something that wouldn't scream 'I just rolled out of bed.'
The Fall Padel Tournament. The social pyramid of Northwood High condensed into three days of racquet sports. Seniors at the top, juniors arguing over second tier, and us freshmen just trying not to embarrass ourselves. Emma — varsity jacket, perfect everything, somehow didn't sweat in 80-degree weather — was signing up pairs at the signup table.
"Don't even," Marcus warned. "She only pairs with athletes or rich kids. We're destined to be fourth-round casualties."
But then my charging cable snagged on Emma's backpack as I walked past, sending my phone clattering across the gym floor. She knelt down to grab it at the same time I did.
"Nice reflexes," she said, actually looking at me instead of through me. "You play?"
"Padel? Uh, sometimes. With my cousins."
"Cool. You're with me then. Don't make me regret this."
Marcus's jaw dropped. THE Emma, three-time tournament winner, choosing the zombie kid with cable coordination issues?
We played like we'd been partners for years. I stopped caring about my hair. I stopped checking my reflection. I stopped feeling like the awkward freshman stuck at the bottom of some invisible pyramid.
We didn't win — seniors absolutely crushed us in the semis — but Emma high-fived me anyway. "Same time next semester, zombie."
"It's zombie搭档 now," I shot back, surprised by my own confidence.
"Deal."
Friday morning, Marcus caught me at my locker. "Dude. What did you DO yesterday?"
"Just played some padel," I said, finally not caring that my curls were doing their own thing. "Just played some padel."
