The Zombie in the Palm Tree

Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's house, especially the tiny garden where magic seemed to hide in every corner. One sunny afternoon, her puppy Barnaby—a golden dog with floppy ears and a tail that never stopped wagging—discovered something extraordinary.

Behind the tallest palm tree, Barnaby started digging furiously. His paws flung sand everywhere until something glinted in the sunlight. Lily knelt beside her dog and gasped. It was an old, rusty cable, stretched tight and disappearing into the earth beneath the palm tree.

"Where does it go?" Lily wondered aloud. She gave the cable a gentle tug. Suddenly, the ground began to shake! But Lily wasn't scared. Instead, something wonderful happened.

Slowly, a small figure climbed up from beneath the palm tree. It looked like a tiny zombie, but not the scary kind from stories. This one had bright purple skin, sparkly green eyes, and wore a little yellow hat with flowers.

"Hello there!" the little zombie said cheerfully. "I'm Zara! I've been sleeping underground for fifty years, waiting for someone to pull my cable!"

Lily's eyes widened. "You're a zombie?"

"A garden zombie!" Zara explained. "We protect special plants and make sure flowers grow strong and tall. My cable got tangled, and I've been stuck ever since!"

Lily and Barnaby helped Zara untangle her cable from the palm roots. The little zombie danced with joy, and magic sparkled from her fingertips. Everywhere she danced, beautiful flowers suddenly bloomed—roses, sunflowers, and tulips in every color imaginable.

"Thank you!" Zara hugged Lily's hand. "You freed me! Now I can continue my work making gardens beautiful!"

From that day on, Lily visited Zara every afternoon. Barnaby would wag his tail while the little zombie showed them how to grow the most magnificent flowers. And sometimes, when the sun was just right, Lily could see Zara's magic cable glowing softly beneath the palm tree, connecting all the magic of the garden together.

Lily learned that sometimes, the things that seem strange or different might just be friends waiting to be found. And with courage and kindness, even a child and her dog could help set magic free.
