The Zombie in the Baseball Cap

Maya pulled her dad's old baseball cap down low, trying to disappear. Last week's varsity tryouts had been a disaster—she'd frozen at home plate, bat feeling like a foreign object in her hands. Now she was ghosting through the halls, basically a zombie from sleep deprivation and overthinking.

"Hey, Zombie Queen!" Jason called from his locker. His voice was too loud, like everything about him lately. "You coming to Bri's party tonight?"

Maya shrugged. "Maybe."

"It's gonna be lit." He grinned, that perfect smile that made her chest feel weird. "Wear the hat. It looks good on you."

She ducked into the bathroom before he could see her blush. Staring at her reflection, she traced the frayed brim of the cap. Her dad had given it to her before he moved out. "For luck," he'd said, but clearly it wasn't working.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up about Bri's party—everyone deciding outfits, posting mirror selfies. Maya felt the familiar zombie fog settling in. That numb, autopilot feeling where she just went through motions, pretending to be normal.

She wasn't going to the party. She was going to the batting cages.

At 7 PM, Maya stood before the pitching machine, baseball cap pulled tight. No audience. No expectations. Just her and the rhythm. First swing: miss. Second swing: solid connection, the crack echoing perfectly through the cage. Third: home run swing, ball soaring into the netting.

She stayed for two hours, until her arms shook and sweat plastered her hair to her forehead. When she finally left, the zombie feeling was gone. Her phone showed 23 missed messages from the group chat.

Maya smiled, tugging the brim of her cap. She wasn't going to be the girl who froze anymore. She wasn't going to be a zombie following everyone else's script. Next week, she'd try out again—this time as herself, not whoever she thought she was supposed to be.
