The Zombie Hair Incident

Maya felt like a zombie—literally. Three consecutive nights of binge-watching her favorite show until 3 AM will do that to you. Her hair? A disaster. Yesterday's DIY bleach experiment had turned her normally sleek brown waves into what her little brother generously called 'straw.'

'So... are you going to school like that?' Leo asked, gesturing at her reflection in the hallway mirror. 'Or are you trying out for The Walking Dead?'

'Shut up, Leo.' Maya yanked a beanie over her head, but the straw-like tufts still poked out stubbornly. Perfect. First day back from winter break, and she looked like she'd been dragged through a hedge backward.

The real problem? The cable was out. AGAIN. No internet, no streaming, no distraction from the hair crisis that was currently occupying her entire brain. She'd have to actually socialize at lunch like some kind of prehistoric caveperson.

'Maybe it's a sign,' her mom suggested helpfully. 'You could talk to people. Remember people? Those creatures with faces that aren't screens?'

Maya groaned. 'You're literally watching cable TV right now.'

'Exactly. I'm experiencing the golden age of television while you're hair-is-tressing over something that'll wash out in two weeks.' Her mom paused. 'Or you could embrace it. Zombie chic is trending, I hear.'

By lunch, Maya had resigned herself to her fate. She'd sit in the corner, avoid eye contact, and pray the cable returned before she had to make actual conversation. But then Skylar—cool, perfect-hair, everyone-loves-her Skylar—plopped down across from her.

'I like the hair,' Skylar said, nodding like this was a serious fashion statement. 'Very post-apocalyptic.'

Maya blinked. 'It's a disaster.'

'It's bold.' Skylar leaned in. 'I've been wanting to do something crazy with mine, but my mom would actually die. You're living the dream.'

Something shifted. Maybe it was the exhaustion talking, or maybe Skylar was right. Maya pulled off the beanie. The straw-like bleached waves tumbled out, and Skylar actually grinned.

'Okay, that's iconic.'

By the time the cable finally came back that evening, Maya's hair was still a mess. But she'd made plans to help Skylars go DIY blonde next weekend. Some experiments are worth the zombie days that follow.
