The Zombie Hair Incident
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in frizzy curls that refused to cooperate. First day of sophomore year, and her hair had staged a mutiny.
"You look like a zombie," her little brother announced from the doorway, chewing on a waffle.
"Thanks, Leo. Really helpful."
She grabbed her backpack and headed out, ignoring him. At school, the hallway was already packed. Everyone seemed so effortless—Chloe with her waterfall braid, Tyler with his messy-but-perfect hair that probably took forty-five minutes to style.
Then there was Maya, hair exploring new territories of frizziness she didn't know existed.
"Hey, Maya!" called Ben, slipping through the crowd with two water bottles. "Practice starts in ten. You bringing it today?"
Ben was on varsity cross country. Maya was trying out for the first time, mostly because she'd accidentally signed up while avoiding eye contact with the guidance counselor.
"Yeah," she lied. "Totally ready."
At practice, the coach set them on a three-mile loop through the park. Maya's lungs burned, her legs felt like lead, and her hair had achieved maximum volume—a glorious, terrifying zombie crown around her head.
She slowed to a walk, gasping. This had been a mistake. Everyone else made it look easy. Chloe ran past, ponytail swinging, probably not even sweating.
Then Ben dropped back, matching her pace.
"You okay?"
"Fine. Just dying."
"First week's always rough." He handed her his extra water bottle. "Here. I've got more."
She took it, fingers brushing against his. "Thanks."
"Your hair's pretty wild, though." Ben grinned. "Like, zombie apocalypse survivor vibes. It's kinda awesome."
Maya blinked. "Awesome?"
"Yeah. You're out here running when you could've skipped. That's badass. Zombie hair or not." He nudged her shoulder. "Come on, let's finish together."
They jogged the last half-mile side by side, Maya's frizzy zombie halo bouncing with every step. And for the first time all day, she didn't care what it looked like.
Sometimes the best version of yourself was the messy one.
