The Zombie Goldfish Wish

Lily loved her dog, Barnaby, a golden retriever with floppy ears and a tail that never stopped wagging. Every day after school, they would walk to the pond to watch the goldfish swimming in the crystal-clear water. Lily would make wishes on the fish, tossing crumbs of bread and whispering her dreams into the ripples.

One cloudy afternoon, just as the sky turned purple with twilight, Lily made her biggest wish yet. "I wish my goldfish could come out and play with me and Barnaby," she said, tossing the biggest bread crumb she had.

Suddenly, the water began to bubble and glow. A small orange goldfish rose on a tiny wave, but something strange happened — its eyes went googly, its fins drooped, and it moved with a wobbly, silly wobble. It flopped onto the grass like it was sleepwalking!

"It's a zombie goldfish!" Lily gasped, but instead of being scared, she giggled. The zombie goldfish stumbled toward Barnaby, who sniffed it curiously. The fish flopped over Barnaby's paw, and the dog barked with delight.

Lily realized this wasn't a scary zombie at all — it was a magic fish brought back to play! She built a tiny moat around the fish so it could swim and flop safely. Barnaby became the zombie goldfish's protector, gently nosing it back to the water when it flopped too far.

For an hour, they played the most wonderful game. The zombie fish would flop, Barnaby would herd it like sheep, and Lily would laugh until her sides hurt. But soon, the fish's googly eyes started to close, and its magical wobble slowed down.

"Time to go back," Lily whispered, understanding that magic wishes have limits. She helped the fish back into the pond, where it shimmered and turned back into a regular swimming goldfish with bright, happy eyes.

The fish swam in a heart pattern before diving deep. Lily waved, her heart full. She had learned something important: magic friendships don't last forever, but the joy they bring stays in your heart always. As she and Barnaby walked home under the first stars, Lily knew some wishes are meant to be wishes — and that's what makes them special.
