The Zombie Goldfish's Secret
Lily found the goldfish floating upside down in its bowl. Its orange scales sparkled, but it wasn't moving. This was the third goldfish this month.
"I wish you wouldn't die," Lily whispered, touching the glass.
Suddenly, the fish flipped right-side up! Its eyes widened, and it did a little flip.
"I'm not dead!" the fish said. "I was just... resting my eyes. I'm a zombie goldfish."
Lily gasped. "A zombie? But zombies are scary!"
"Not me," said the fish, whose name was Finley. "I just come back to life when things get boring. Being a zombie is actually quite convenient. Want to see something magical?"
Finley did a splashy dance, and water droplets turned into tiny glowing papayas that floated in the air!
"Whoa!" Lily clapped.
Just then, a huge bear poked its head through the window. Lily screamed, but the bear spoke in a gentle voice.
"Don't be afraid. I'm Bernadette, and I'm here because of the papaya signal."
"Papaya signal?"
"Finley's magic papayas mean someone needs help," Bernadette explained. "What's wrong, little one?"
Lily explained how her grandmother lived across the river, but the old cable bridge had broken. They hadn't visited in months.
"A cable bridge!" Finley exclaimed. "I can help with that!"
Finley splashed water that transformed into a shimmering cable made of rainbow light. It stretched from Lily's window, across the river, all the way to Grandmother's house.
"Hold my paw," Bernadette said. "I'll carry you across."
Lily climbed onto the bear's soft back, and they walked across the magical cable. Below, the river sparkled like diamonds. When they reached Grandmother's house, she was waiting with open arms.
"I've missed you so much!" Grandmother hugged Lily.
That night, Lily understood something wonderful: sometimes, things that seem scary or strange—like zombie fish or visiting bears—can bring the most magic of all. And true friendship, she learned, is the greatest adventure of all.
Finley lived in a special pond after that, and every time Lily visited Grandmother, she crossed the rainbow cable with Bernadette. The zombie goldfish had given her the best gift: knowing that magic exists in the most unexpected places, especially between friends.
