The Zombie Goldfish's Secret

Lily's goldfish, Orangey, had been floating sideways for three days. Her cat, Whiskers, sat on the bathroom counter, twitching his tail as if he knew something Lily didn't.

"He's gone, sweetie," Mom said gently. "Even the extra vitamin drops didn't help."

But that night, Lily heard something splash. She crept to the fishbowl with her old iphone — the one Mom said she could only use as a flashlight — and shone it into the water.

Orangey was swimming! But he looked different — transparent and glowing, with tiny sparkles floating around him like magical dust.

"You're a zombie goldfish!" Lily whispered. Orangey blew bubbles that formed words: NOT ZOMBIE. MAGIC.

Whiskers hopped onto the table and meowed seriously. The cat pawed at Lily's phone, and suddenly its screen showed a map to the backyard.

"You can understand him?" Lily gasped. Whiskers nodded.

Following the iphone's glowing trail, they found an old wooden box buried beneath the oak tree. Inside shimmered a golden vitamin — but this wasn't any ordinary vitamin. It pulsed with rainbow light.

Orangey's message appeared in bubbles again: THE STAR VITAMIN. MAGIC FISH NEED MAGIC FOOD.

Lily carefully dropped the star vitamin into Orangey's bowl. Instantly, Orangey's scales turned brilliant orange again. He grew wings and flew out of the water, circling Lily's room like a tiny, glittering helicopter.

"Thank you!" Orangey chirped. "I was stuck between magic and real worlds. Now I can visit both!"

Whiskers purred proudly as Orangey did loop-de-loops around them. That night, Lily learned that some things aren't really gone — sometimes they're just waiting for the right kind of magic to wake them up.

And every evening after homework, Orangey would fly Lily and Whiskers on adventures to the Secret Kingdom of Fish, where goldfish told stories and cats could talk, and the most wonderful vitamin of all was friendship.
