The Zombie Goldfish's Magical Swim

Lily was a girl who loved two things above all else: her fluffy orange cat named Marmalade, and swimming in the shimmering blue lake behind her house. Every summer afternoon, she'd leap into the cool water while Marmalade sat on the dock, dipping one cautious paw in to test the temperature.

One day, something peculiar happened. As Lily splashed beneath the surface, she spotted a flash of green scales. A small goldfish with unusually sparkly eyes swam right up to her goggles and said, "Hello there!"

Lily surfaced, gasping with wonder. "You can talk!"

"Of course," said the goldfish. "I'm not a normal fish. I'm a zombie goldfish!"

Lily giggled. "But zombies are scary monsters in stories!"

"Not all zombies," explained the fish, whose name was Finnegan. "I was once a regular pet fish, but a kind wizard gave me a second chance at life. Now I swim forever, granting wishes to children with kind hearts."

Marmalade leaned over the dock, meowing curiously at the talking fish.

"Your cat can see me too," Finnegan said. "Animals know magic when they see it."

Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—to fly, to have infinite candy, to become a princess. But she remembered how lonely she sometimes felt when her friends moved away. "I wish for a friend who loves swimming as much as I do."

Finnegan's scales glowed brighter than ever. "Your wish shall swim true!"

The next day, a new family moved in next door. Their daughter, Sophie, had just arrived from across the ocean. When Lily saw her swimming in the lake—with even more enthusiasm than Marmalade chasing butterflies—she knew Finnegan had worked his magic.

"Want to race?" Sophie called, grinning.

Lily dove in, and together they swam side by side, while Marmalade purred proudly on the dock and a certain zombie goldfish shimmered in the depths below, watching his latest friendship blossom.

Sometimes, Lily realized, the best magic doesn't come from zombies or wishes. It comes from opening your heart to new adventures—and new friends.
