The Zombie Goldfish of Willow Pond

Barnaby was a golden retriever who loved two things more than anything in the world: swimming and making new friends. Every sunny afternoon, he would splash into the cool blue water of Willow Pond, his tail wagging like a happy flag.

One day, while Barnaby was paddling near the lily pads, he spotted something strange. A little goldfish was floating upside down, barely moving. Her scales were dull gray instead of shiny orange, and her eyes looked sleepy and confused.

"Oh no!" thought Barnaby. "She must be sick!"

The old turtle who lived by the pond's edge slowly lifted his head. "That's no ordinary sick fish, Barnaby. That's a zombie goldfish. A grumpy wizard cast a spell on her last week. Now she can only swim slowly and thinks everything is funny."

Barnaby's eyes widened. A zombie? That sounded scary! But this little fish just looked lonely.

"Hello?" Barnaby woofed softly, creating tiny ripples in the water.

The zombie goldfish turned slowly toward him. "Hee hee hee," she giggled, blowing bubbles. "Nice doggy. Water is wet. Everything is funny."

Barnaby's heart melted. She wasn't scary at all—she just needed a friend!

Every day that week, Barnaby visited his new friend. He swam alongside her slow, zombie-like movements. He told her jokes that made her giggle even more. He shared his treats with her (the turtle said carrots were okay for goldfish).

On Friday, something magical happened. As Barnaby nuzzled the water gently, his kindness warmed the zombie spell right out of the little goldfish. Her scales turned shiny orange again! She darted around joyfully, finally able to swim fast.

"Thank you, Barnaby!" she chirped. "Your friendship broke the magic spell!"

Barnaby learned something wonderful that day: sometimes the scariest things just need a little kindness. And sometimes, the best kind of swimming isn't about racing—it's about making sure everyone can splash along together.

From then on, if you looked carefully at Willow Pond, you might see a golden retriever swimming alongside a sparkly orange goldfish, both of them laughing and splashing, the very best of friends.
