The Zombie Goldfish of Palm Tree Lane
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and run to the field behind the old palm tree at the corner of Palm Tree Lane. But nobody ever wanted to play with the boy whose messy hair always stuck up like he'd been struck by lightning.
One hot afternoon, Leo hit his favorite baseball right into the highest branches of the palm tree. He climbed up, reaching and stretching, when something magical happened. A coconut cracked open, and inside sat a tiny goldfish swimming in sparkling water.
"I'm Barnaby," the goldfish bubbled. "And I'm a zombie."
Leo gasped. "A scary zombie?"
"No, silly!" Barnaby laughed, creating tiny ripples. "A zombie goldfish means I died and came back to life with magic powers! Watch this!"
Barnaby made Leo's baseball float down from the tree and spin in the air like a tiny planet.
"Want to play?" Leo asked, eyes wide.
For weeks, Leo and Barnaby played magical baseball. Barnaby could make the ball zoom, curve, and dance. Leo's wild hair would bounce as he ran, and for the first time, he didn't care what anyone thought.
One day, other children gathered to watch. "Can we play too?" asked a girl named Mia.
Leo's heart beat fast. What if they made fun of his hair? What if they thought a zombie goldfish was weird?
Barnaby swam to his coconut edge. "True friends love you for who you are, Leo — wild hair, magical fish, and all!"
Leo took a deep breath. "Sure! But you have to meet my best friend first."
That afternoon, Leo taught everyone to play magical baseball with Barnaby's help. The children cheered when Leo's hair stuck up after he slid into home plate. They giggled when Barnaby made the baseball do loop-de-loops.
Nobody had ever had more fun on Palm Tree Lane. And Leo learned that the best friends aren't the ones who look the same or act normal — they're the ones who celebrate what makes you wonderfully, magically YOU.
