The Zombie Goldfish Friend
Leo was running through the park, his sneakers splashing through puddles after the morning rain. He loved the water — how it sparkled in the sun, how it felt cool on his skin, how everything seemed possible near it.
That's when he saw the goldfish. It was orange and bright, floating in a small pond near the old willow tree. But this goldfish was strange. It kept following him! When Leo moved left, the fish swam left. When Leo ran right along the edge, the fish zipped right.
"That fish must be a zombie!" Leo giggled. "A zombie goldfish that came back just to play with me!"
Every day after school, Leo ran to the pond. Every day, the orange goldfish was waiting, zipping and zooming around like it was dancing just for him.
Leo started bringing his friend Emma to meet the fish. Emma was skeptical at first.
"Goldfish don't follow people," she said, crossing her arms. "And they're definitely not zombie fish!"
But then the goldfish did a silly little flip, splashing water right at Emma's shoes. Emma laughed, and soon she was running around the pond too, both of them chasing and being chased by their zombie fish friend.
One afternoon, Leo found a small notebook near the pond. Someone had written inside: "This is Comet. She's the smartest goldfish ever. She loves making new friends."
Leo realized Comet wasn't a zombie at all. She was just a very special fish with a big heart, looking for friendship just like him.
Leo and Emma visited Comet every day that summer. They discovered that when you're open to wonder, the world becomes full of magic. And sometimes the best friends are the ones you find in the most unexpected places — even in a goldfish pond, swimming through the water, ready for adventure.
