The Zombie Friend's Magic Pool
Lily pushed her curly hair out of her eyes as she stood at the edge of the old swimming pool behind her grandmother's house. The pool looked like it had been sleeping for years — its water was green and still, with leaves floating on top like tiny boats.
"I dare you to go swimming," said her best friend Mateo, grinning mischievously.
Lily shook her head. "No way. That pool looks haunted."
Just then, something strange bubbled up from the deep end. Not bubbles — but a hand! A greenish, glowing hand! It reached up, then down, then up again.
"It's a zombie!" Mateo whispered, eyes wide.
But this zombie wasn't scary like in movies. Slowly, a creature emerged. It had messy algae-covered hair that looked like seaweed, skin that shimmered like emeralds, and the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen. The zombie-creature blinked and waved.
"Hello," it said in a voice like water music. "I'm Zim. I've been sleeping in this pool for one hundred years."
"You're... a zombie?" Lily asked, her fear turning to wonder.
Zim nodded. "A pool zombie. I'm the guardian of special swimming places. But I've been so lonely down there. Will you be my friend?"
Lily and Mateo looked at each other. This wasn't a monster at all — it was someone who just needed a friend.
"YES!" they both shouted.
That summer, the pool became the most magical place in the world. Zim taught them to swim underwater for impossibly long times. He showed them secret tunnels that led to a hidden grotto filled with glowing crystals. And best of all, he made the pool water sparkle and bubble like ginger ale.
"Being a zombie isn't scary," Zim told them one afternoon. "It's just being different. And different friends make the best adventures."
When summer ended, Lily had to go back home. But she knew that in her grandmother's backyard, a magical zombie friend waited in a glowing pool. And every night, she dreamed of swimming among stars with the friend who taught her that scary things can be wonderful — if you're brave enough to say hello.
