The Zombie Fox of Bear Creek

Maya pulled her beanie **hat** down over her ears, trying to disappear into the hoodie. First week at Northwood High, and she'd already established herself as That Quiet Girl. Not the mysterious cool kind. Just... invisible.

"You okay?" whispered Jordan, the only person who'd actually spoken to her since she arrived. They were huddled in the auditorium for the Fall Assembly, watching the principal drone on about school spirit.

Maya nodded, lying. She'd stayed up until 3 AM scrolling through her old school's Instagram tag, watching people she used to know live their best lives without her. Now she was operating on pure caffeine and regret, a total **zombie** moving through the day.

"Hey," Jordan said, eyeing her carefully. "You play?" He gestured to the guitar case peeking out of Maya's backpack. She'd brought it for comfort, not planning to actually play.

"A little."

"The band needs someone. We're playing at the Fall Festival next Friday." Jordan's friend group - a mixed crew of theater kids, stoners, and one varsity wrestler who seemed genuinely nice - were all watching her now.

"I'll think about it," Maya said, heart pounding.

The next week passed in a blur. Then came the assembly announcement: tryouts for the talent show. And the real kicker - Jason, the senior who'd everyone said was a total **bear** about his music (overprotective, territorial, scary good), was performing with his band.

Maya's locker neighbor, a junior named Riley who always wore this oversized vintage jacket and had cunning eyes that reminded Maya of a **fox**, caught her humming. "You're good. You should try out."

"No way. Jason's band dominates everything."

"Exactly," Riley grinned. "Someone needs to shake things up."

So Maya did it. She sang and played, shaking so hard she almost dropped her pick. But when she finished, the silence wasn't the awkward kind. It was the kind that means people are actually listening.

She got third place. Jason got second. A freshman named Riley - fox-eyed, beaming - got first with a killer original song.

Afterward, Jordan's crew adopted her. She wasn't That Quiet Girl anymore. She was Maya, who played music and hung out with theater kids and somehow didn't care about being cool. She still wore her **hat** every day, but not to hide. Just because it was hers.
