The Zombie Firefly's Secret

Leo was the best nature spy in the neighborhood. Every afternoon, he'd grab his magnifying glass and sneak through the tall grass behind his house, spying on ladybugs and tracking ant parades. His messy brown hair always stuck out in every direction, especially when he was excited.

One hot day, Leo discovered something magical. Hidden in the forest was a small pool with water that glowed bright orange, like liquid sunshine. Dragonflies with shimmering wings skimmed the surface, leaving ripples that turned to tiny rainbows.

Suddenly, a small green figure stumbled out from behind a mushroom. It was a firefly—but not like any Leo had ever seen. This firefly moved in slow, jerky steps. Its glow flickered weakly. It bumped into a flower pot and fell over.

"Are you... a zombie firefly?" Leo whispered, giggling.

The little creature shook its head. "I'm Ziggy," it buzzed in a tiny voice. "I'm not a zombie. I'm just very sleepy in the daytime. Fireflies are nocturnal, you know. My light gets all confused when the sun is out."

Ziggy's wild orange hair—made of fuzzy moss—stuck straight up. Leo helped his new friend stand up.

"Why is your pool orange?" Leo asked.

"It's magic!" Ziggy said. "Orange flowers drop their petals here every sunset. The pool turns their color into wishes. What do you wish for?"

Leo thought carefully. He could wish for anything. But looking at Ziggy's tired glow, he knew exactly what to choose.

"I wish for Ziggy to have enough energy to play, day or night."

The orange water bubbled and sparkled. Suddenly, Ziggy's light grew strong and steady. His mossy hair puffed up with joy. Together, Leo and Ziggy spent the whole afternoon playing hide-and-seek in the magical forest.

Leo learned that sometimes the most wonderful friends come in the most surprising packages. And every night when he saw Ziggy's light glowing bright among the stars, he remembered: judging others by how they move or look might mean missing out on something magical.
