The Zombie Dog Who Loved to Swim

Lily was the only kid in town who knew the secret of the old oak tree by Miller's Pond. Every full moon, she would sneak out with her flashlight and a pocketful of dog treats, just like her grandmother had taught her.

"Come on out, Barnaby!" she would whisper, and that's when she would see him—a fluffy golden dog with bright, happy eyes who would trot out from behind the tree. Barnaby wasn't just any dog. Lily's grandmother had explained that Barnaby was a special kind of magical creature called a "zombie dog"—not scary at all, but a friendly spirit dog who came back to visit because he loved swimming in the pond so much!

Barnaby would do his famous zombie dance, wiggling his whole body from nose to tail, making Lily giggle until her sides hurt. Then they would race to the water's edge, and splash! Barnaby loved swimming more than anything in the world. His golden fur would sparkle in the moonlight as he paddled around, chasing imaginary fish and barking at the ripples.

One night, Lily brought her little brother Timmy along. "But zombies are scary!" Timmy protested, hiding behind her.

"Not Barnaby," Lily promised. "He's a zombie dog who just wants to play."

When Barnaby appeared and did his silly zombie wiggle, Timmy couldn't stop laughing. Soon, all three of them were swimming together under the stars, splashing and playing until their fingers turned wrinkly.

From that night on, Lily learned that sometimes the things that seem scary at first can turn out to be the most wonderful friends of all. And every full moon, you could find three friends by Miller's Pond—a girl, her brother, and one magical zombie dog, all swimming beneath the silver moon, making memories that would last forever.
