The Zombie Dance Champion
Lily was the smallest girl in her neighborhood, but she had the biggest dreams. Every day after school, she would watch the older kids playing padel at the community court, their racquets flashing in the sunlight as they laughed and rallied.
"Someday," Lily whispered to her best friend, Barnaby, a scruffy golden dog with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down. Barnaby wagged his tail as if he understood every word.
Lily's older brother, Max, was the best padel player in town. He practiced the "zombie" move—a funny, slow-motion dance he did between points to make everyone laugh. Even though Max could be annoying, Lily secretly thought the zombie dance was the coolest thing ever.
One Saturday, the annual Padel Tournament was announced. Lily wanted to sign up, but the coach shook his head. "You're too small, sweetheart. Maybe next year."
Lily's eyes filled with tears. She ran behind the court with Barnaby following close behind. "They're wrong about you," she told Barnaby, burying her face in his soft fur. "I'm not too small. I'm just... concentrated awesomeness!"
Barnaby barked in agreement.
Every morning for a month, Lily practiced. Max taught her the zombie dance, and soon she could do it perfectly—arms stiff, legs dragging, tongue sticking out. But Lily added her own special twist: at the end, she would spin and jump like a shooting star.
On tournament day, Max got sick and couldn't play. The coach looked worried. "Now we're one player short!"
Lily stepped forward. "I'll play."
The coach was about to say no, but then he saw something in Lily's eyes—a fire that burned brighter than the sun. "Okay," he said slowly. "But remember, this is for fun."
The match was intense. Lily's opponent was tall and fast. But between every point, Lily did her zombie dance with the spinning finish. The crowd began to cheer. Her opponent started smiling. Even the grumpy referee chuckled.
And then, something magical happened. The more Lily danced, the more confident she felt. She moved like the wind, hit like thunder, and smiled like sunshine. When she won the final point, the whole stadium erupted.
Lily didn't just win the tournament that day. She showed everyone that being different wasn't just okay—it was spectacular. And Barnaby? He got his own special medal made from an old padel ball, which he wore proudly for the rest of his life.
From then on, anyone could join the tournament, no matter their size. Because Lily taught them all something important: the best way to win is to dance like nobody's watching... even if you dance like a zombie.
