The Zombie Cat's Magic Pool
Lily loved summer, but today everything felt wrong. Her black cat, Midnight, had been acting strangely all week. He moved slowly, his fur stuck up in weird tufts, and he kept staggering around the backyard like he was in a daze.
"He's a zombie cat!" laughed Lily's friend Ben, who lived next door. "Zombie cats eat brains!"
Midnight did look funny—his long black hair stuck out everywhere, making him look wild and spooky. But Lily knew better. Her cat wasn't a zombie. He was just sick, or maybe sad.
Then Lily noticed something strange. A thick orange cable snaked across the grass, glowing faintly in the twilight. She'd never seen it before. Following it with her flashlight, she discovered it led to the old swimming pool behind her house—the one nobody had used for years.
The pool wasn't full of dirty water anymore. It was full of stars. Real stars, swirling and glowing like liquid night sky.
Midnight sat by the edge, staring into the starry pool with his yellow eyes wide.
"The pool is magic!" Lily whispered. She remembered the old stories her grandmother told her about Star Pools—places where animals went to dream with the moon.
Gently, Lily picked up Midnight and set him down on the pool's first step. The moment his paws touched the starry water, his wild hair smoothed down. He purred—a deep, happy sound that echoed like music.
Ben had followed the cable too. "Whoa," he breathed. "It's not a zombie. He was just trying to get to the Star Pool!"
The orange cable pulsed with light, connecting to something they couldn't see. Maybe the moon. Maybe another world. Midnight splashed happily, each ripple sending up tiny sparkles that floated into the sky.
Lily and Ben sat by the pool's edge, watching their cat swim through constellations. They realized something wonderful: sometimes things seem scary or strange, but there's often magic underneath if you're brave enough to look.
That night, Midnight wasn't a zombie cat anymore. He was a Star Cat, with a galaxy in his fur and magic in his heart. And Lily knew that some secrets are worth sharing—especially the magical ones.
The cable slowly faded away as dawn approached. But every night since, when the moon shines bright, Lily finds her cat by the Star Pool, waiting for his next adventure among the stars.
