The Zombie Cat and the Magic Pool

Max watched from behind the fence. The old cat walked funny, stumbling like a zombie. Its fur was patchy and missing in places. The neighborhood kids called it "the zombie cat" and crossed the street when they saw it.

But Max didn't run away. He noticed something sad in the cat's yellow eyes.

One Saturday, Max peeked through the wooden fence into Mrs. Johnson's backyard. The zombie cat stood by the swimming pool, dipping one paw in the water. Then another. Soon, the scruffy cat was swimming!

"Wow!" Max whispered.

The cat climbed out, shook water everywhere, and curled up on a warm stone. Max crept closer. The cat didn't run away. It purred.

Every day that summer, Max visited the zombie cat. He named him Zed. Zed loved the pool. The water made his joints feel better, Max could tell.

One day, Max's mom noticed him sneaking vitamins from the kitchen. "What are you doing with those?"

"I'm giving them to Zed," Max said. "He needs them to get strong."

His mom smiled. "That's very kind, Max. But cat vitamins are different. Let's ask the vet what Zed needs."

The vet came to see the swimming zombie cat. She laughed when Zed did laps in the pool. "This old fellow has arthritis," she said. "The warm water helps. And yes, he needs special vitamins and good food."

Max used his allowance to buy Zed's food and vitamins. Every day, he'd crush the vitamin into Zed's dinner and watch him eat. Then they'd sit by the pool together.

By fall, Zed wasn't stumbling anymore. His fur grew back thick and shiny. He didn't look like a zombie at all. But Max still called him Zed, and Zed still loved his pool time.

"What did we learn?" Max's mom asked one day.

"That scary things aren't always scary," Max said. "And that friends help each other get better."

Zed purred and nudged Max's hand with his wet nose. The zombie cat wasn't a zombie anymore. He was Max's best friend.

And every summer afternoon, you could find them by the pool — Max reading books, Zed swimming laps, both happy and healthy, thanks to a little kindness and the magic of vitamins.
