The Zombie by the Palm Pool
Lily and Jake loved visiting their grandmother's house in Florida. The best part was the backyard pool surrounded by swaying palm trees that whispered secrets in the breeze.
One hot afternoon, while their parents napped inside, the siblings crept out to the pool for a secret swim. The water sparkled like diamonds under the bright sun.
"Race you to the other side!" Jake shouted, splashing into the cool blue water.
Lily was about to jump in when she noticed something strange near the largest palm tree. A figure was shuffling toward them, arms stretched out, making a low groaning sound.
"JAKE!" she whispered frantically. "It's a zombie!"
Jake popped up from the water, dripping wet. "What?"
Lily pointed. The figure—slowly, clumsily—made its way closer. It had ragged clothes, messy hair, and kept saying "Braaains... braaains..." in a funny voice.
Jake's eyes went wide. He grabbed his pool noodle like a sword. "Stay back, zombie! The pool is protected!"
Lily grabbed her giant inflatable flamingo. "Yeah! We're not afraid of you!"
The zombie stopped at the pool's edge. It looked at them with sad eyes and slumped its shoulders.
"But..." came the voice, not scary at all, but kind of small and disappointed. "I just wanted to play marco polo with you guys. Everyone runs away when they see me."
Jake lowered his pool noodle. "Wait, you're not going to eat our brains?"
"Eww, no!" The zombie made a disgusted face. "I LOVE the pool. My name's Zed. I'm the pool guardian. I keep the water clean and safe for kids like you."
Lily and Jake looked at each other, then back at Zed. His shambling walk was just because he was clumsy, not because he was scary. And his groaning? He was just practicing for his role in the neighborhood's Halloween haunted house.
"Sorry we judged you," Lily said, feeling bad. "Do you want to play with us?"
Zed's face lit up. "Really?"
"Really!" Jake said. "You can be It first. MARCO!"
"POLO!" shouted Zed, diving into the water with a splash.
They played until the sun started setting behind the palm trees, painting the sky orange and pink. Zed turned out to be terrible at marco polo—he always forgot to listen for "polo" and just swam around saying "marco" over and over.
As they dried off, Zed promised to watch over the pool whenever they visited.
"Just remember," he told them, "sometimes things that seem scary at first are really just friends you haven't met yet."
Lily and Jake waved goodbye to their new friend, already planning their next pool adventure. They couldn't wait to come back and play with Zed the zombie again.
