The Zombie Bull of Willow Lane

Leo loved his stuffed bull, Barnaby. Barnaby had soft brown fur, gentle button eyes, and the friendliest smile Leo had ever seen. But one terrible afternoon, Leo's big sister accidentally left Barnaby outside in the rain.

By morning, poor Barnaby was soaked through. His cotton stuffing sagged like a wet sponge. One ear drooped sadly. His fuzz had turned into clumpy, wild hair that stuck up every which way. Leo's mom sighed and shook her head. "He's done for, sweetie. We should throw him away."

"No!" Leo cradled Barnaby to his chest. "He's my best friend!"

That night, while thunder rumbled outside, something magical happened. A beam of moonlight glinted off something in Leo's closet — his old cat costume from Halloween! The plastic whiskers glowed faintly. The costume had sat untouched for years, but tonight it shimmered with an otherworldly silver light.

Leo had an idea. What if Barnaby needed magic to feel better?

He placed the soggy bull beside the cat costume and made a wish. A REAL wish, with all his heart. "Please come back, Barnaby. Please."

The room filled with sparkles, like fireflies dancing in summer dusk. Barnaby's droopy ear twitched. His tangled hair smoothed out and became softer than before. The bull's button eyes twinkled, and suddenly — impossibly — Barnaby stood up on his own four stubby legs!

"Leo?" Barnaby whispered. His voice sounded like windchimes. "Did you call me?"

Leo's jaw dropped. His bull had come back! Like a zombie from storybooks, but nicer. Much, much nicer.

Barnaby wasn't just stuffed animal anymore. He was MAGIC now. He could walk and talk and even float a little bit above the ground when he was happy. The cat costume's magic had brought him back, but friendship was what made him special.

"You saved me," Barnaby said, bumping his fuzzy forehead against Leo's hand. "Friendship is the strongest magic there is. Stronger than rain. Stronger than anything."

They sat together by the window, watching the stars. Leo knew other kids might think a zombie bull sounded scary. But his Barnaby? He was the most wonderful friend in the whole world.

Some things, Leo learned, don't stay gone forever. Not when love — and a little moonlit magic — can bring them back better than ever.
