The Zombie Bull Hat Heist
Maya dragged herself into third period like a **zombie**, the Monday morning energy drinks having completely worn off by 10 AM. Three hours of sleep tended to do that to a person, especially when you'd spent the entire night overthinking every social interaction from the previous week's back-to-school dance.
"You look dead," observed Leo, sliding into the desk beside her. "Like, actually deceased."
"Thanks, Leo. Really boosting the confidence there." Maya adjusted her favorite black beanie—her **hat** was basically a security blanket at this point. Without it, she felt exposed, like everyone could see her internal monologue written across her forehead.
Mr. Henderson announced the semester's first group project, and Maya's stomach did that familiar flippy thing it always did when the words "work together" left a teacher's mouth. The room erupted into that awkward chaos where everyone scrambled to claim their friend groups before they got stuck with That One Person Who Never Does Anything.
Before Maya could even open her mouth, Leo was already giving her this look. "You and me? We're doing this."
"I mean, I guess—" Her response was cut off by Tyler **Bull** (yes, that was his actual last name, and yes, the irony was completely lost on no one) sauntering over to their desk like he owned the entire school.
"Actually," Tyler announced, with that confidence that only came from being varsity quarterback and genuinely believing the world revolved around your existence, "Coach said I need partners who actually care about grades. So you're with me."
Maya and Leo exchanged a look that said approximately seventeen different things at once.
"Bro," Leo started, "we literally already—"
"Not up for debate," Tyler cut him off, already pulling up a chair. "You're welcome, by the way. I'm practically carrying this group."
Maya felt her face heating up. The Zombie Squad—that's what she and Leo jokingly called their exhausted, over-it duo—had never formally been invaded by a member of Tyler's species: the genuinely popular, annoyingly competent, and weirdly compelling upper echelon of the social hierarchy.
"Fine," she said, adjusting her hat like armor. "But if you slack off, I'm telling Coach."
Tyler actually laughed. "Deal."
Three weeks later, after they'd somehow pulled off an A-worthy presentation that involved Maya's research skills, Leo's chaotic energy, and Tyler's weirdly effective leadership, Tyler did something unexpected. He handed Maya his varsity jacket before the football game, saying she looked cold and that she'd earned it for "carrying the team" on the project.
She wore it over her **hat**-covered hair, feeling like an imposter, but also... maybe like she belonged somewhere in the middle of everything.
Leo found her afterward, grinning like he knew something she didn't. "Looks like the **zombie** finally woke up, huh?"
"Shut up, Leo," she said, but she was smiling. Sometimes the weirdest combinations made the most sense.
